Tanagers

About Us

Kevin & Hailey

Tanager Photography is the slow-cooked paella of Kevin and Hailey Day.

Born and raised in Colorado, Kevin is a semi-pro photographer with a day job in travel publishing. For years, photography and writing have arm wrestled for Passion-in-Chief, and while he recently declared photography the winner, the bout continues.

His favorite subject for photography is anything involving travel, but he also photographs weddings, portraiture (especially kids) and food. He has experience as a stock photographer and continues to sell and license his images through the PhotoShelter Personal Archive.

Hailey hails from Maryland — her great Colorado experiment (which started in 1997 with a bachelors at Colorado College) is now indefinite. For Hailey, passions aren’t so simple. She paints, she cooks, she shoots and she designs websites, graphics, and animations for a living with her own company, HeyDay Creative.

Their travel has taken them to Italy, Spain, Hawaii, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Belize, Cape Cod and of course, all over the freaking place in Colorado.

Tanagers

What is a Tanager?

We could have called our photography business something dull, but we opted to name our li’l outfit after a family of songbird that has a track-record of extensive travels, the tanager (rhymes with manager).

In Colorado, the most spectacular bird you’ll see is the Western Tanager, a magnificent bird with bright gold feathers, crisp black wings and a flame-red crown. Interestingly enough, these little guys travel as far south as Panama in winter.

We’ve seen a variety of tanagers in the United States, Costa Rica, Belize, and Ecuador, and it's always an amazing experience. Their insanely bright colors, bold patterns and communal habits — plus their ridiculous migration routes — represent what many of our photos stand for: beauty travels.

Here are some tanagers we were fortunate enough to photograph in Los Bancos, Ecuador. Across from upper left to lower right: Bay-Headed Tanager, Lemon-Rumped Tanager, Golden Tanager Silver-Throated Tanager, Blue-Necked Tanager, Rufous-Throated Tanager
